Wastewater

What is Sanitary Sewer Service?

While SCWD delivers about 7 million gallons of water to homes and businesses, it also removes nearly 4 million gallons of wastewater. This is water that has been used, from cooking to bathing, that goes down drains, gutters, toilets, tubs, and sinks.
Wastewater is removed via the sanitary sewer system, consisting  of 133 miles of pipes, 14 lift stations, and 3 miles of force mains, all of which is accessible by 3,048 manholes across the District's service area. The system directs wastewater to one of two treatment plants. The Coastal Treatment Plant, or CTP, in Laguna Niguel in the North, and th J.B. Latham Treatment Plant in Dana Point in the South. Both are managed by the South Orange County Wastewater Authority.

What happens to my wastewater?

Wastewater undergoes pre-treatment, primary treatment and secondary treatment, before it safely enters the ocean miles offshore through a pipeline (outfall.) The treated wastewater (effluent) meets the quality standards of the Federal Clean Water Act for offshore discharge.
